Weather Flashcards
Air mass
A air mass is a large body of air with similar properties throughout it.
Continental polar (cp)
Continental polar stands for land that is cold and dry
Maritime polar (mp)
Maritime polar stands for land that is wet and cold
Continental tropical (ct)
Continental tropical stands for land that is warm and dry
Maritime tropical (mt)
Maritime tropical stands for land that is warm and wet
Front
A front is the boundary between 2 air masses
Warm front
When warm air mass meets and overrides a cold air mass creating warmer temperatures and light rain/drizzle for a period of time; moves slowly
Cold front
Cold air mass meets and causes warm air to rise and produces thunderstorms, heavy rain, snow, and brings cooler weather; moves faster
Occluded front
A cold air mass overtakes a slower moving warm air mass and forces warm air to go up. The cold air continues advancing until it meets another cold air mass, brings cooler temperatures, and usually brings more precipitation that can cause floods
Stationary front
Cold air mass meets a warm air mass and results in little movement, drizzles, doesn’t bing heavy precipitation, and has little movement or moves back and forth over the same area
Wind vane
Shows the direction the wind is blowing from
Rain gauge
Measures how much rain has fallen
Thermometer
Measures the temperature of something or someone
Hygrometer
Measures the moisture or humidity in the air
Barometer
Shows and measures the air pressure
