Weather and Regulations Flashcards
What is Sea Breeze?
A wind that blows from the cool water to warmer land.
During the day, a low-level sea breeze flows from sea to land dur to the pressure gradient from the temperatures differential between the land and water.
As afternoon heating increases, the sea breeze can reach speeds of 10 to 20 knots.
What is Land Breeze?
A wind that blows from the cooler land to the warmer water.
^ At night, land cools faster than water.
Land breeze can reach an altitude of 1,000 to 2,000 feets AGL.
What is Valley Breeze?
An upslope flow of wind created when the heated air of the mountain slopes is less dense than the air at the same altitude over the valley.
What is a Mountain Breeze?
A downslope flow of wind created when the high terrain cools at night and eventually becomes cooler than the air over the valley.
What are Katabic Wings?
Downwind flows that are stronger than mountain breezes.
What is Temperature Inversion and its associated weather?
Temperature Inversion = When temperature increases with altitude
It works as a lid for weather and pollutants.
Below the inversion, visibility is often restricted by fog, haze, smoke, and low clouds.
Temperature inversions occcur in stable air with little or no wind and turbalance.
What are the Water State change process?
- Evaporation
- Condensation
- Sublimation
- Deposition
What is Evaporation?
The changing of liquid water to invisible water vapor (as water vapor forms, heat is absorbed from the nearest available source [latent heat of evaporation]).
What is Condensation?
When water vapor changes to a liquid (the heat absorbed by water vapor during evaporation is released [latent heat of condensation]).
What is Sumblimation?
The changing of ice directly to water vapor (melting).
