Weather Flashcards
Air mass
A large body of air with similar properties through it
Continental polar
An air mass that is cold and dry
Maritime polar
An air mass that is cold and wet
Continental tropical
An air mass that is warm and dry
Maritime tropical
An air mass that is warm and wet
Front
The boundary between two air masses
Warm front
When warm air meets a cold air mass and overtakes it. It can cause warmer temperatures and long periods of light drizzle.
Cold front
When a cold air mass meets a warm air mass and causes the warm air to rise. It is fast moving and produces thunderstorms, heavy rain, or snow
Occluded front
When a cold air mass overtakes a slower moving warm air mass and forces the warm air up. The cold air keeps advancing until it meets another cold air mass. It brings cooler temperatures and more precipitation.
Stationary front
When a cold air mass meets a warm air mass and results in little movement. It brings very light precipitation.
