Air mass
A large body of air w/ similar properties through it
Continental polar
(cP) cold and dry
Maritime polar
(mP) cold and wet
Maritime tropical
(mP) wet and warm
Continental tropical
(cT) warm and dry
Front
A front is the boundary between two air masses
Warm front
Warm air mass meet and overrides a cold air mass; brings long periods of light drizzle and brings warmer temps.
Cold front
Cold air mass meet and causes warm air to rise; fast moving; produces thunderstorms; brings cooler temps.
Occluded fronts
A cold air mass overtakes a slower moving warm air mass and forces warm air up. The cold air continues advancing until it meets another cold air mass; brings cooler temps; usually brings more precipitation.
Stationary front
Cold air mass meets a warm air mass and results in little movement; drizzles, doesn’t bring heavy precipitation; little movement, or moves back and forth over the same area
