The Water Cycle Flashcards
Water cycle
The repeated movement of water through Earth in different forms
Evaporation
The changing of liquid water to water vapor
Condensation
Water vapor turns into liquid water; clouds and dew form
Precipitation
Water falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
Sublimation
Ice changing into water vapor w/o first melting
Runoff
Water moving downhill
Water vapor
Water as an invisible gas
Fog
A cloud at ground level; forms when air near the ground cools; the more after droplets that condense, the thicker the fog
Cumulus
Mid-altitude; small, white, puffy balls - look like cotton balls; brings fair weather
Stratus
Low-altitude; looks like a gray blanket covering the sky; brings light rain/drizzle
Cirrus
Thin, whispy, and white; high altitude; brings fair weather; looks like a feather
Vertical cloud
Grow vertically; stretch from 1,000-12,000 meters; can be very dark in color; brings thunderstorms
Transpiration
How plants get food
Rain
Starts as ice crystals; turns to raindrops as the temperature goes above freezing (greater than 33’F r 0’C)
Freezing rain
Starts as ice crystals; turns to raindrops; air near the ground is colder than 32’F or 0’C; raindrops freeze as they TOUCH any object
