. Russia was a massive nation which covered over one sixth of the worlds land mass meaning it had vast amounts of untapped resources.
. Due to Russia’s massive population it could afford to maintain a large army which meant it held quite a lot of influence both nationally and internationally due to this.

. Even though Russia maintained a very large army it was backward and technologically inferior compared to other nations e.g. Japan defeated Russia in the Russo Japanese war.
. Russia’s economy was Agrarian based which was very backward due to medieval farming techniques such as strip farming and industry hadn’t really developed yet.

. Russia had a massive amount of untapped resources which meant that the Russian economy could be greatly enhanced if these resources were made use of.
. Russia’s size meant that it had great room for industrial expansion and it maintained a largely untapped workforce.
State 2 threats Russia faced at this time
. The sheer number of different ethnics in Russia meant that a lot of people were against the Tsar and the Tsars policy of Russification put them against him even more.
. Groups such as the Liberals wanted reforms and a national parliament which would threaten the Tsars Autocratic government and power.
