What were Russia’s economic aims of the war?
. The Russians sought after a warm water port in the Pacific for their navy and maritime trade. Port Arthur was a port which was open all year and did not freeze up in the winter.
What were Russia’s political aims in the conflict?
. The Tsar wanted a quick and victorious war against the Japanese in order to stem the rise of domestic upset, to reassure the people and give himself more personal prestige.
What were the Tsars personal reason for going to war?
. When Nicholas went to Japan in 1890 there was an attempt on his life and because of this he held a deep hatred for the Japanese.
Why did the Russians see themselves superior over the Japanese?
. The Russians saw the Japanese as an inferior, backward nation ( much similar to China) whose military and navy were no match for their own.

What effect did the war have on Nicholas and how did it effect Russia?
. Nicholas’s personal prestige was greatly reduced and to some the war proved the inefficiencies of the Tsarist regime and it was a leading factor for the revolution of 1905.
