WBC disorders Flashcards
What are the 5 types of leukocytes
Granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes
Leucopoiesis
Formation of new white blood cells
Precursor of granulocytes
Myeloblasts
Blood film
Blood samples smear onto microscope slide to observe morphology
Lymphocyte vs neutrophil morphology differentiation
L - mononuclear
N - polynuclear
Both similar in size
Eosinophil morphology
Two lobes
Basophil morphology
Many granules
Monocyte morphology
Larger
Leucocytosis
Increase in total leukocyte numbers
Leucopenia
Decrease in total leukocyte numbers
Leukaemia
Neoplasia of leucopoietic tissue with a large increase in numbers
Malignant
leukemoid reaction
Increase in leukocyte number via leucocytosis but still benign. Caused by stress or chronic infections
Neutrophil leucocytosis indicate
Bacterial infection and tissue damage (inflammation)
Lymphocytosis
Viral infection
Eosinophilia
Parasitic infection, allergies
