WBC Count and Differential Flashcards
Consists of RBC count, indices, and differential, WBC count, PCV, TP, HgB, Platelet estimate, and retic count
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A high WBC count is called
leukocytosis
Low WBC count is called
leukopenia
3 Phagocytic WBCs
Monocytes, Eosinophils, and Neutrophils
MEN LIKE TO EAT
3 granulocytes
Basophils, Eosinophils, and Neutrophils
BEN HAS A GRAINY SENSE OF HUMOR
Glass slide used to do a manual WBC count
Hemacytometer
WBC maturation process
- Myeloblast
- Promyelocyte
- Myelocyte
- Metamyelocyte
- Band cells
- Neutrophils
Youngest form of WBC with large, round cell
Prominent nucleolus
Myeloblast
Has a perinuclear, clear zone (white)
Promyelocyte
May contain a single indentation
Myelocyte
Kidney shaped nucleus
Chromatin is granular and condensed
Metamyelocyte
Horse-shoe shaped nucleus
Band neutrophils
Multiple segments
Chromatin is very condensed
Segmented Neutrophils
5 or more segments is
hypersegmented
These have large, rod shaped granules
Look like red raspberries
Eosinophils
Normal WBC in dogs
6.0-17.0 x 10^3/mm3
Normal WBC in cats
5.5-19.5 x 10^3/mm3
First line of defense of the leukocytes
Produces pyrogen that leads to inflammation and fever
Neutrophils
A lot of band cells
Presence of non-segmented neutrophils caused by inflammation
Left Shift
Neutrophils in avian patients
Heterophils
Bigger in size with a frothy cytoplasm
Have vacuoles with blue tint to cytoplasm
Toxic cells
Abundance of hypersegmented neutrophils
An increase in the number of mature neutrophils but no immature cells are present
Right Shift
Decrease in neutrophils
Neutropenia
Seen with allergic reactions
Deactivates histamines and release lysosomes to kill/damage parasites
Eosinophils
Causes acute allergic reactions by releasing histamines
Carry heparin to keep blood from clotting
Basophils
T Cells and B Cells
Agranular and mononuclear
Lymphocytes
These lymphocytes appear after an animal is vaccinated
Reactive
Highly phagocytic
Larger than other WBCs
Monocytes
When monocytes travel to tissues they are called
Macrophages
Parts of viruses in WBC and RBCs
Canine Distemper Viral Inclusions
Bacteria that infects granulocytes and monocytes
Spread by ticks or aquatic insects
Ehrlichia
Ehrlichia that affects horses
AKA Potomac Horse Fever
Ehrlichia risitcii
Looks like a bruise
Toxic neutrophils
Doehle bodies
An inherited abnormality that doesn’t harm the animal
Pelger-huet anomaly
