Waves + Beaches Flashcards
Constructive waves
Lower + larger wavelength — 6-8 per minute
Strong, uninterrupted swash - starts at nearshore — makes sediment beam
Destructive waves
Higher + smaller wavelength - 13-15 per minute
Slower waves approach steep berm
Circular motion means mass goes on beach
Seasonal
Constructive in summer
Destructive in winter
Coastal morphology
Changing the shape of the coastline
Percolation
Water passing through spaces in ground (pore spaces)
Shingle + destructive
Shallow + wide beach
Percolation means backwash not as large
Balanced swash + backwash
Shingle + constructive
Steep + wide
Large swash - more deposition of rocks
Percolation makes small backwash
Sandy + destructive
Steep + narrow
Little percolation means large backwash
Sandy + constructive
Wide + gentle
Large swash means high sediment deposition
