Coastal Zones Flashcards
Cliffed coastlines
Formed by rock with varying hardness
Makes erosional coastlines + varying geodiversity
Coastal plains (alluvial)
Deposited sediment makes gradually sloping land
Primary coasts
Land based processes - river deposition, land from volcanic lava
Secondary coasts
Marine erosion / deposition
Littoral zone
Made of backshore, nearshore, offshore
Offshore
Area furthest seaward, away from land
Nearshore
Area from high tide mark to where waves break
Includes areas affected by currents (proximity to land)
Backshore
Area from high tide mark to where physiography changes (sand dune / cliff)
Wave breaking
When waves reach coastline, bottom slows from friction, top spills forward
