Waves Flashcards
What is the definition of a wave
Waves transfer energy from one place to another
What are the two types of waves
Transverse and Longitudinal
Describe Transverse waves
In transverse waves the particles of the medium VIBRATE at right angles to the direction of the wave.
Describe Longitudinal waves
In longitudinal waves the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of the wave
What type of waves are transverse and Longitudinal
Longitudinal- sound waves. Transverse- Light waves
What part of the wave is called the crest
The high parts are called Crests
What part of the wave is called the trough
The low parts are called Troughs
What is the wavelength λ
The wavelength is the distance between two SUCCESSIVE PEAKS
What is the amplitude A
The amplitude is the height of crest from the middle of the wave
What is the frequency
The frequency is the number of waves per second
What wave has compressions and rarefactions
Longitudinal waves have compressions and refractions instead of crests and troughs
What is the wave equation
Speed= Frequency x Wavelength
Speed measured in m/s
Frequency measured in Hz (per second)
Wavelength measured in M
what is the relationship between angle of incidence and Reflection
They are equal
what happens to the speed of waves in shallow water
The speed slows down
What happens to the wavelength of wave in shallow water
The wave length decreases
