Waves Flashcards
When the waves are travelling what happens to the particles
The particles vibrate
What do particles do when they are between each other as the vibrate
They transfer energy
When energy transfers what happens to the particles
The particles stay in the same place
Tell me 2 things about longitudinal waves
In longitudinal waves the vibrations are in the same direction the wave is traveling at
They have compressions and rarefactions
Name 2 examples of longitudinal waves
Sound waves and seismic p-waves
What happens in transverse waves
Vibrations are perpendicular to the direction the wave travels
Name 2 examples of transverse waves
Electromagnetic waves and water waves
What is amplitude
Maximum displacement of a point on the wave rest position
What is wavelength
The distance from 1 wave to another
What is frequency
The number of waves passing a certain point each second
What is period
Amount of time it takes for 1 wave to pass a certain point
What are the 2 equations of wave speed
Wave speed= wavelength x Frequency
(M/S) (M) (Hz)
Wave speed= Distance divide time
M/S (M) (S)
