Waves Flashcards
Name the eleven types of waves.
Ultraviolet (UV), Electromagnetic/Radiation, Gamma, Sound, X-Rays, Earthquake/Seismic, Light, Microwaves, Heat, Infrared, Water.
How is sound produced?
Sound is produced by the energy of vibrating objects.
How is sound carried?
Sound is carried in waves away from the vibrating object.
What are sound waves?
Sound waves are a series of compressions and rarefractions.
What is loudness?
Loudness is the amplitude of the wave.
What is tone?
Tone is the pitch, or squeakiness of the wave.
What is reflected sound called?
An echo
When does sound travel at different speeds?
In air of different temperatures
What is dispersion?
Dispersion is when you can hear sounds from the next room.
What do high pitched sounds have?
A short wavelength and high frequency.
What do low pitched sounds have?
A long wavelength and low frequency.
How does an oscilloscope allow us to see sound waves?
As sound waves hit the microphone, they cause vibrations that change the amount of electrical energy. It converts the longitudinal sound wave into the transverse wave that you can see. The microphone changes sound energy into electrical energy.
