Waves Flashcards
What is amplitude?
The maximum displacement of the wave
What is in phase?
Particles along a wave that move in phase move in the same direction with the same speed. The particles have the same displacement from their mean position.
What is Antiphase?
Particles along a wave that move in antiphase move in opposite directions at the same speed. The particles have opposite displacement from their mean position
What is Phase difference
It is measured as a fraction of the wave cycle between 2 points along a wave.
What is out of phase
Particles along the wave are at different points in their cycle at a particular time
Define Progressive waves
Waves travels through a vacuum transferring energy.
Define Longitudinal waves
Particles vibrate parallel to the direction that energy travels in
Define Transverse waves
Waves vibration are at right angle to the direction that energy travels in.
What is material dispersion
It is the spreading of a signal caused by the variation of refractive index with wavelength
What is modal dispersion
It is the spreading of a signal caused by rays taking slightly different paths in the fibre.
What is pulse broadening?
It occurs when the duration of the pulse increases as a result of dispersion in an optic fibre
What is coherence
When they have a fixed phase difference but same frequency
How does Resonance happen
It occurs when an oscillating system is forced to oscillate by an outside source at a frequency that is the same as its own natural frequency
