Light Particles Flashcards
What is Specific charge?
The ratio of charge to mass (Ckg^-1)
What is an isotope?
Atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutron
What is Annihilation?
A particle and its corresponding antiparticle collide, as a result their masses convert to energy
Describe Pair production?
A photon is converted into an equal amount of matter and antimatter
What is threshold frequency?
It is the minimum frequency of light required to cause the photoelectric effect
What is photoelectric effect?
Where photoelectrons are emitted from the surface of a metal after light above the thereshold frequency is shone on it.
What is work function?
The minimum energy required for electrons to be emitted from the surface of a metal
What is stopping potential
The potential difference you would need to apply across the metal to stop the photoelectrons with the maximum kinetic energy.
Describe Excitation
Electron gain energy from collisions from free electrons, which cause them move up in energy levels
Describe Ionisation
When the electron gain enough energy to be removed from an atom
