waves Flashcards
what is the bottom of a wave called
trough
what is the top of a wave called
crest
what does displacement mean
how far a point on the wave is from the middle line.
what is the term for how far a point the wave is from the middle line
displacement
what is the name for the maximum displacement and what does it mean.
amplitude. the distance form the middle of the wave to a crest or trough.
what is the order of the waves?
Radio waves, microwaves, infra-red, visible light, ultra violet, x-ray and gamma ray.
What is infra-red?
Part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The human eye cannot see it, but humans can detect it as heat. A remote control uses light waves just beyond the visible spectrum of light—infrared light waves—to change channels on your TV.
What is ultra violet?
The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum extending from the violet, or short-wavelength, end of the visible light range to the X-ray region. It can be used to create fluorescent effects. for example light shining on invisible ink in order to make it visible.
What is gamma ray?
It is similar to an x-ray but is used in award-winning cancer screening devices and in surgical procedures to guide removal of tumours.
