Waves Flashcards
What is the direction that waves travel called?
Propagation
Why do waves happen?
Vibrations travelling from a starting point
How can you practically demonstrate waves?
Water, ripple tank and springs
Velocity of a wave equation
v = f λ
What is wavelength measured in? λ
Metres
What is frequency’s unit?
Hertz Hz
Time period equation
T = 1/frequency
What is amplitude of a wave?
How high crest is, volume.
What is Wavelength ?
λ measured in metres. Crest to crest. Trough to trough.
What is frequency?
measured in hertz (Hz). The number of waves passing per second
High frequency = high pitcg
What is a transverse wave?
When the vibrations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation
Examples of transverse waves
Light, S waves, x-ray, sea waves and electromagnetic radiation
What is a longitudinal wave?
When vibrations are parallel to the direction of propagation with compressions and rarefactions
Examples of longitudinal waves
Ultrasound, P-waves, sound, pushing end of a spring
What is diffraction?
When waves spread out as they bend around objects
