Waves Flashcards
What are waves used to do ?
Transfer energy.
What is a Transverse Wave?
A wave where the particles vibrate at right angles to the direction of the energy transfer
What is a Longitudinal wave?
A wave where the particles vibrate in the same direction as the motion of the wave.
What is an example of a Longitudinal wave?
Sound wave
What are 3 examples of Transverse waves?
Water, light, radiowaves, microwaves or x-rays
What is the frequency of a wave?
The number of waves produced in one second.
What is the unit for frequency?
HZ (Hertz)
What is the Amplitude of a wave?
The height of a wave (centre to top/bottom)
What is the wavelength of a wave?
Length of a wave (peak to peak)
What is the period of a wave?
Time for one wave
What is refraction?
The change in wave speed of light when changing medium.
What type of waves are the EM Spectrum?
Transverse
What speed do EM waves travel at ?
Speed of light (3.0x10*8 ms-1)
The order of the EM spectrum in increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength is:
radio - microwave - infared - visable - ultraviolet - x-ray - gamma ray
