Dynamics Flashcards
What is the definition of speed?
The distance travelled per unit of time.
What is instantaneous speed?
The speed at one point in a journey.
What is acceleration?
The change in velocity per second.
How do you find the acceleration from a Speed-Time Graph?
It can be found from the gradient of the line, or the equation a = v-u
—–
t
How do you calculate distance from a Speed-Time Graph?
It can be found by calculating the area under the line.
When are the forces on an object said to be balanced?
When they are Equal in size and act in opposite directions.
What is Friction?
A force which opposes motion.
What energy is produced when two surfaces rub together?
Heat energy
What is a summarised version of Newton’s First Law of Motion?
Balanced forces give a constant velocity.
What are the rules of Newton’s Second Law of Motion?
When an unbalanced force acts on an object, it accelerates. The acceleration is the same size as the unbalanced force and when acceleration increases, mass decreases.
What is Mass?
The quantity of matter making up an object.
What is weight?
The “force of gravity” on an object.
What is the general rule for Mass?
Mass is the same everywhere.
What is the general rule for weight?
Changes depending on location.
What is the unit for Mass?
Kilograms (kg)
