Water world: Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
What is evaporation
Evaporation is the change of a liquid into a vapour at a temperature below the boiling point
What is the hydrological cycle
The natural recycling of water between the oceans, Earth and atmosphere.
A river or drainage basin is that part of the cycle which operates on land, it consists of inputs, stores, flows and outputs
What is condensation
The act or process of reducing a gas or vapour to a liquid or solid form
What is precipitation
Rain, snow, sleet etc formed by condensation of water vapour in the atmosphere
What is interception
When rain hits the plants and slows down to hit the floor
What is transpiration
The passage of water through a plant from the roots through the vascular system to the atmosphere
What is infiltration
The process by which water on the ground surface enters soil
What is percolation
To cause ( liquid) to pass through a proud substance or small holes; filter
What is saturation
The state of the atmosphere when it can hold no more water vapour at its given temperature and pressure
What is surface run-off
Water in streams running into the river
What is groundwater flow
Water stored in rocks following percolation
What is throughflow
The lateral unsaturated flow of water in the soil zone
What is the water table
The surface where the water pressure head is equal to the atmospheric pressure
