Water World Flashcards

Q
What is through flow?
A
Rainwater soaks into the soil and flows slowly through it to rivers
1
Q
What is overland flow?
A
Rain falls onto the ground and flows on the surface to rivers and lakes
2
Q
What is groundwater flow?
A
Rainwater soaks into rocks below the soil. It moves slowly though the air spaces
3
Q
What are the three main reasons why water supplies are unreliable?
A
- There may be distinct water and dry seasons
- Weather cycles can occur . So an area may get 3-5 dry years followed by the same number of wet years.
- There is evidence for global warming and a continuing rise in temperatures
4
Q
What are some causes of river pollution?
A
- Untreated sewage pumped into rivers can lead to diseases
- fertilisers, pesticides and poison wildlife and affect water quality
- chemicals from factories can poison wildlife and affect water quality
5
Q
What are some ways to manage water pollution?
A
- sewage is treated before pumped into rivers
- use of fertilisers and chemicals on land is regulated to reduce pollution
- factories get rid of their chemical products before the return to the river
6
Q
What are some advantages of the tree gorges dam?
A
- Flood risk for homes, farms and factories is reduced along the Yangtze River
- hydroelectric power is generated by turbines in the dam
- the river is more navigable for ships and so transport is improved
7
Q
What are some disadvantages of the Three Gorges Dam?
A
- Good farmland lost because of the lake
- sediment is building up behind the dam
- important wetland areas have been destroyed
8
Q
What is a hand pump?
A
It’s a more efficient way of reaching underground water. There is less chance of the water being contaminated
