Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Palate Boudaries Flashcards
what is a conservative plate boundary?
Two plates slide past each other which causes earthquakes
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Two plates collide, one plate flows beneath this is subduction. This causes earthquakes and volcanoes
What is a constructive plate boundary?
Convection currents pull crust apart forming volcanic ridge
What is a collision plate boundary?
Two continental plates collide and the two plates buckle. This causes earthquakes
Describe how a tsunami is formed?
When an earthquake or volcanic eruption happens at sea and the movement of the plate make all of the water on top to rise
What are shield volcanoes?
- found on constructive plate boundary
- formed by eruptions of thin runny lava which flows a long way before solidifying
- wide base and gently sloping sides
- contain basaltic magma which is very hot with low silica and has content
What are composite volcanoes?
- Destructive plate boundary
- formed by eruptions sticky lava which does t flow far
- have steep soling sides and narrow base
- made of layers of think lava and ash
- contain magma which is less hot
What is used to measure the energy of an earthquake?
Richter scale
What can help predict earthquakes and volcanoes?
- animals and birds moving from the area
- an increase in gas emissions
- increase in soil temperature
- increase in small earthquakes
- water ponds getting warmer
What is needed after a volcanic eruption or earthquake?
- medical centre to care for the injured
- food as others are damaged
- clean water to prevent the spread of diseases
- radio communications
