Water, Weak Acids and Bases Q2 Flashcards
Why does water have a high specific heat?
Due to its hydrogen bonds.
What can cause a stronger vs a weaker hydrogen bond?
The direction of the bonding. IE straight vs bent.
When delta G is negative, what does this mean for a reaction?
It will be spontaneous reaction.
What is an amphipathic compound?
One that is both polar and non polar
explain hypertonic vs hypotonic solutions.
Hypertonic is where there are more solutes in solution and hypotonic is when there is less solutes in solution.
What is the definition of pKa?
It is the pH when the acid and the base are equal concentrations.
What is the most important buffer for saliva?
Bicarbonate
What are the three systems that controll the pH of the body?
Acid-base buffering, Respiratory center, Kidneys
