Water Supply Flashcards
Icon Water Responsible for what?
Water Supply, Hydrant Supply, Hydrant Maintenance
Sources Of Water
Static Supply, Reticulated Supply
What are the three types of water mains?
Trunk Mains, Service Mains, Ring Main
What are the three types of water mains?
Trunk Mains, Service Mains, Ring Main
Describe a Reticulation Supply
A system divided into pressure zones and with a local service reservoirs which are supplied by pump stations which in turn are supplied by Dams or water supplies. Local reservoirs supply the service mains.
Describe Pressure
Force of which water is supplied. Affected by lengths or hose and distances between components. Demand on mains and sizes affects pressure too.
Describe Flow
Quantity of water delivered. Affected by diameter, condition of internal surface and pressure.
Name three types of Hydrants
Spring Valve Hydrant, Pillar Hydrant and High Capacity Hydrant.
Name the parts of a spring valve hydrant.
Bayonet Lugs, Ball Valve, Spring
Name the parts of a Stand Pipe
Handle Wheel, spindle, blank cap, gated lever, Storz Coupling, Head, Handles, Barrel, threaded collar, lugs, sealing washer.
Where would you find and what are the parts of a high capacity hydrant?
Located in high risk areas. 2x 64mm, 1x125mm outlets.
Where would you find pillar Hydrants
In older suburbs, kept for heritage purposes. Will have new spring valves adjacent.
What is a water hammer and how does it occur?
A water hammer occurs when a supply is suddenly shut off, causing a shock wave through the water column. Joints and components can be damaged.
What does a Hydrant Booster System do?
Allows ACTFR to boost pressure of internal hydrants. Using two lines for the feed hydrant, to appliance which boosts pressure and then two lines to hydrant which goes to internal hydrants. Communication between pump operator and operator is vital.
Characteristics of Internal Hydrants for pre and post 1994.
Pre 1994 found within 4 meters of exit, post, within fire stairwell.
