BA Flashcards
What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion?
Dizziness, lethargy, nausea, abdominal discomfort and/or burning sensation of the skin.
What is the function of breathing apparatus?
To enable the wearer to work in an atmosphere that would not otherwise support life.
What are the three types of breathing apparatus?
Open circuit demand and positive pressure breathing apparatus.
Filtering equipment - Neg pressure respirators, Pos pressure powered respirators.
Closed Circuit oxygen breathing apparatus.
How does Open Circuit Breathing Apparatus work?
Supplies air to the wearer from a static source, mainly a cylinder. Once inhaled and exhaled, the air passes to the atmosphere. This is what ACTFR use.
What are the three Cylinder Duration Definitions
Full Definitions, Working Durations, Safety Margin.
Define Full Duration
Is the time taken for the pressure in a fully charged cylinder or cylinders to fall to 1Mpa.
Define working duration.
Is the time a BA is expected to last from the moment it is started up until the low pressure warning whistle sounds.
Define Safety Margin
The time from when the warning whistle sounds until the cylinder is exhausted.
How does air get into the blood stream?
Via the aveoli into the blood haemoglobin.
At what percentage does carbon dioxide reach to send a signal to the brain to exhale?
4% carbon dioxide
What is the composition of the atmosphere before and after exhalation?
Before: nitrogen 78.09%, Oxygen 20.95%, Carbon Dioxide .04%, other gases .92%
After: nitrogen same, Oxygen 17%, Carbon Dioxide 4%, other gases same
What are the four types of irrespirable atmosphere?
Oxygen Deficient
Toxic gases and fumes
Smoke
Elevated Temperatures
How much more efficient is Carbon Monoxide at combining with the haemoglobin than oxygen?
200 times more efficient
What are two ways an oxygen deficient environment is created?
Combustion, which consumes oxygen.
Extinguishing agents, which displace oxygen.
What is the difference between a work set and an escape set?
A work set has nominal effective life exceeding 15 minutes.
A escape has a nominal effective life of less than 15 minutes.
What are the six components of the face mask?
Speech Transmission Diaphragm
Exhalation Valve
Inner mask
Polycarbonate Visor
Head Harness and Neck Strap
Demand Valve Port
What can be done if the demand valve has broken?
The bypass knob can be used to allow air to flow to mask.
What is the function of the inner mask?
Reduces CO2 dead space and prevents misting of the visor.
In what order do you tighten the facemask?
Bottom, Middle, Top
Are what level of Bar will the whistle sound?
55 bar +- 5
What does the coloured ring on the cylinder indicate?
Indicates year/month hydrostatic testing was done.
What markings will a cylinder have?
Manufactures Mark
Specification Number
Serial Number
Water Capacity
Test Pressure
How do you calculate cylinder duration?
(W x B x C) / 40
W = water Capacity
B = Bars
C = Compression Factor .911
What does 1 bar equate to?
Regular atmospheric pressure
How often is Hydrostatic Stretch Testing done?
Every 5 years in ACTFR
At what Bar would you change over a cylinder during pre operational checks?
260 bar
How long is the safety margin?
8-10 minutes
How long will it take the DSU to be set off by lack of movement?
18 - 23 seconds
How many litres of air is there in a cylinder at 300 bar?
1860 Litres
When twining, are both cylinders open during use?
Yes
If the demand valve hose is damaged, how many litres a minute will leak out?
25 litres per minute
What sort of BA system is used by ACTFR?
Open circuit, positive pressure
What will the pressure be of the valve the flight mask connects too?
Medium pressure.
What are the components of the SCBA Propak?
Harness and Backplate
Cylinder Band and Clamp
Cylinder Connector
Pressure Reducer
Demand Valve and Hose
Face mask
Pressure Gauge and warning whistle
Rescue second mask attachment
Cylinder
What is the aim of the primary search?
To conduct a rapid and systematic search of all areas of the structure that the team can search.
What is the aim of the secondary search?
Once situation is under control, it confirms possible casualties and helps account for all occupants.
What are the six components of the entrapment procedure?
Send radio message to OIC
Activate distress unit or tap
Remain calm and avoid excitement/exertion
If charged branch available, saturate surroundings
Select safest possible place, ideally a wall, pillar or other support.
Remaining calm should reduce usage to 10Lpm
Never remove face mask
Define a irrespirable atmosphere.
Is one which cannot safely be breathed.
Define a irrespirable atmosphere.
One which cannot safely be breathed.
What ACTFR Policy discusses Uniform, PPC, Dress and Deportment?
ACTFR Policy Number OP-11
When should a breathing apparatus be worn?
When there is any doubt as to the quality and safety of the working environment.
What are the different types of BA Control Equipment?
Tally Tag
Electronic Timer
Stage 1 Control Board
Stage 2 Control Board
Main Control
