Water Structure Flashcards
Structure of water molecule?
Two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to one oxygen atoms.
Oxygen atom- total of 8 electrons
Each hydrogen atom- 1 electron
What are lone pairs?
Oxygen atom has two additional pairs of electrons that are not involved with bonding.
Why is water a polar molecule?
It has an unequal sharing of electrons between oxygen and hydrogen atoms.
Why is water a polar molecule?
It has an unequal sharing of electrons between oxygen and hydrogen atoms.
Is oxygen more electronegative than hydrogen?
Yes.
Why does oxygen atom develop negative charge?
Pulls electrons closer to itself
Why does the hydrogen atom develop a slight positive charge?
Electrons are pulled away from them.
What is a dipole?
One end of water molecule (oxygen) is lightly negative.
Other end (hydrogen) is slightly positive.
Hydrogen bonds?
- Weak electrostatic bond
- Causes water molecules to stick together
