Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins made of?
Repeated amino acids
How many different amino acids are there?
20
How are proteins formed?
Carboxyl group to amine group, joined by a peptide bond through a condensation reaction.
Primary structure of proteins?
The linear order of amino acids joined by peptide bonds
Secondary structure of proteins?
3D structured stabilised by hydrogen bonds between carboxylate and amine dipole residues.
Alpha helix and Beta pleated sheets
Tertiary structure?
3D shape of entire polypeptide chain- based on interactions of R groups with different properties
Quaternary structure?
Multiple polypeptide chains forming a functioning protein
Prosthetic Groups?
Non-protein molecules associated with proteins. I.e haem group in haemoglobin
