Inorganic Ions Flashcards
1
Q
Inorganic ion?
A
Does not contain carbon
Charged atoms or molecules. Either:
Cation (positive)
Anion (negative)
2
Q
Where are inorganic ions found?
A
In the cytoplasm of cells
In body fluids of organisms
In biological molecules
3
Q
Macronutrient?
A
Inorganic ion found in high conc
4
Q
Micronutrient?
A
Inorganic ion found in low conc. Trace element
5
Q
What do sodium ions do?
A
Involved in co-transport of glucose and amino acids across membranes.
6
Q
What do hydrogen ions do?
A
Determine pH levels and acidity
7
Q
What do iron ions do?
A
Important part of haemoglobin and so are key to how oxygen is transported around the body by red blood cells.
8
Q
What do phosphate ions do?
A
- Essential component of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Phosphodiester bonds form DNA and RNA backbone
- Used to produce ATP
- Key to phosphorylation
- Found in phospholipids
