Water Stress + Demand Flashcards
Demand for water
As pop of world + way we use water is changing the demand for water = inc.
Demands that out increased pressure on the water supply + can result in water stress/scarcity
Inc pop
Improving living standards
Agriculture
Industrialisation
Water stress + scarcity
When a water supply = limited w/i = area it can be seen 2 have water stress/scarcity
Can also be seen where the demand is sig above the availability
Water stress defined =
As an areas w/ less than 1,700m3 water per person
Water scarcity defined =
As an area w/ less than 1,000m3 water per person
Inc pop
As the worlds pop = inc the amount of water that contrives are expecting 2 use is increasing
Developed nations w/ higher standards of living this can result = total demand being sig higher than natural supply
Improved living standards
Developed nations (UK + USA) water-consuming devices = washing machines contribute to water consumption. Unnecessary uses = water = swimming pools + water fountains can also be found
CONTRAST- More rural + underdeveloped areas only consume water that has been directly collected from a local water source
As countries develop + the middle classes expand so do living standards + use of water-consuming devices
Agriculture
Developing nations = maj = water use will be assigned 4 agriculture because it’s the main industry for income - this water can be wasteful
Some countries have X developed a clear way of identifying water consumption + paying for it appropriately
Rural = Tanzania farmers pay a 1-off annual fee 2 access = water source (river/well). Leads 2 farmers using more water than necessary because they feel like they have already ‘paid 4 it’
Industrialisation
Electricity =needed 2 power factories used by industry. But production of most energy is v water dependent - form = steam to power turbines
A sig amount of water = needed 2 clean the equipment too
E.g. Rajasthan India a coca-cola bottling factory uses the equivalent for 4 bottles of water 2 produce 1 bottle = Coca-Cola
