Climate Change Impacts = Sahel Flashcards
Sahel is
An arid region bordering to the south of the Sahara Desert. We can look at it as an example to see how climate change has affected the hydrological cycle in that location
Precipitation
Sahel = rainfall is low around 100mm-600 per yr
Sahel has rainy season from July - Sep during which 90% of the regions precipitation falls
During 1970s + 1980s rain declined by around 40%. Led to drought poverty + civil war broke out = euthipoia (ppl fought for water + land)
Changes in climate change
Since 1996 = climate seems to have been changing
There’s been five significant wetter yrs
Inc = wetter yrs has been referred 2 as ‘re-greening’ opportunity. Locals have taken advantage of wetter yrs by ensuring the regeneration = water retaining vegetation + low costs afforestation
