Water resources in the UK Flashcards
water supply
the provision of water by individuals, communities, public bodies or companies
water demand
the quantity of water required to meet peoples needs
water transfer shcemes
move water via pipe or truck from areas of supply to areas of demand
water stress
the combination of supply and demand, when supply is low and water demands is high this creates a high water stress
causes of water pollution
-chemicals such a pesticides running off farming land
-sewage containing bacteria may be pumped into rivers
-untreated waste from industries
how does water pollution affect the UK?
-toxic waste can poison wildlife, sometimes toxins can be transferred to humans if they eat shellfish which can lead to cancer
-drinking water supply can be poisoned
-micro bacteria in sewage can cause the spread of infectious disease in aquatic life, animals and humans
how is water quality managed?
-education campaigns
-pollution traps
-green roofs and walls
-waste water treatments
what do education campaigns do?
inform the public about disposing of inappropriate items into sewage systems and how to dispose of them correctly
what do pollution traps do?
reed beds are often installed to ‘catch’ and filter out pollution
what do green roofs and walls do?
new buildings often have green roofs which filter out pollutants naturally in rain water
what do waste water treatments do?
local water treatment plants remove suspended solids such as silt and soil
