how does rice fish farming work?
it’s planting rice and breeding fish in a way that they benefit each other
how are the fish and the rice mutually beneficial to each other?
the fish eat the insects from the rice field and the rice is fertilized by the fish faeces
how has the rice-fish farming scheme benefitted the farmer and his community?
-he used to earn $112 for every 1,000 square metre of field but with rice fish farming it’s around $370 (3 times more)
-he’s able to pay salaries to all his friends
-the community don’t need to go far to get a job
-with his extra income he can buy more land, a motorcycle and send his kids to school (increases their personal mobility)
describe the process of rice fish farming
(1) choose a site
(2) build a dyke
(3) dig a ditch for fish to live in
(4) plant the rice in rows
(5) fill ditch with purified water
(6) when rice starts to grow add more water
(7) add fish
