Factors affecting demand and supply for fod Flashcards
why is world food consumption increasing?
when people get richer the first thing they buy is food- economic driver, also as population increase, the more people that need food
what factors affect food supply?
-climate disasters
-greater levels of conflict
-lack of technology
-more pests and diseases
-higher levels of water stress
-higher levels of poverty
what are the causes of decreased food supply because of climate disasters?
-drought causes the loss of crops and livestock and also reduces the fertility of farmland
-floods can wipe out crops and livestock
-altered weather patterns cause distress
what are the causes of decreased food supply because of greater levels of conflict?
-difficult to move food in and out of countries
-farmers who used to grow crops were enlisted
-when a side begins to lose they use scorched earth policy (burning land)
what are the causes of decreased food supply because of lack of technology?
-without technology food yields tend to remain low
-unskilled use of irrigation can lead to waterlogging
-without mechanisation it leads to low levels of productivity
what are the causes of decreased food supply because of more pests and diseases?
-rising global temperatures are causing diseases to spread north and south from the Tropics
-pests such as mice and rats destroy crops
-malaria worsens food security
what are the causes of decreased food supply because of higher levels of water stress?
-when there are floods the water becomes dirty and polluted
-when the water supply is unreliable and rainfall is low there’s less water available for crops and livestock
what are the causes of decreased food supply because of higher levels of poverty?
-people can not afford to buy nutritious food for themselves and their families
-this makes them weaker and unable to work
-poorer farmers can’t afford land
