Water Resources II Flashcards
What are the 8 different types of pollution??
Infectious agents O2 demanding wastes Inorganic chemicals Organic chemicals Sediment Radioactive Thermal Plant nutrients
What is a non point source?
Different sources of pollution that can’t be traced to a single source
- multiple small sources contributing
What are point sources?
Pollution discharge at a specific location
How do we measure water quality?
Dissolved oxygen
What do you use when testing method are expensive?
Biotic indicators
Do rivers/streams or lakes recover more quickly from pollution?
Rivers and streams because the water is flowing and can circulate the pollutants through
What is stratification?
Water separates that normally doesn’t interact in a certain season
- makes it hard for contaminants to escape
What is being done to fix the contaminated Hamilton harbour?
Underground bunker out over top of the most contaminate areas
What was the experiment done in the ELA with estrogen?
Full lake test is estrogen effected fish population
- lake with estrogen, males had preformed eggs in their testicles an pad therefore the population declined because the males weren’t producing sperm
- once the estrogen was removed, fish were able to fully recover in 3 years
Why is ground water highly susceptible to pollution?
Because the water moves so slow
- less O2 in the ground so breakdown of the components is very slow
What is fracking?
It is the extraction of methane and natural gas from below ground
How does fracking work?
Pipe inserted in the ground is pumped with water. The pressure makes cracks in the surrounding rock(fissures). Methane is leased through the the fissures and rises to the water table where it can be separated from the water to be collected
What is water pollution?
Any chemical or biological or physical change to water quality that has harmful or undesired effects
