Non-renewable Energy Resources Flashcards
What is net energy?
High quality energy remaining after accounting for extraction
- takes energy to get energy
- if ratio is over 1 you have energy gain
How is oil formed?
Each of ancient decaying organic matter
- sediments burry it and it gets cooked under pressure
How do you extract oil?
Drill past the oil deposit so gravity will draw the oil out and into the well to be drilled up
What does heating of oil do?
Can be turned into different fuels for different things
Who produces the most oil?
Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Alberta Iraq and Iran
Why are we exporting most of our oil to the US?
Because they have depleted most of their resources, and it is on the decline. They don’t have anymore
What is peak oil production?
Max amount of conventional oil extracted
How can we get into the gas and oil that’s in the Arctic?
Because it’s getting warmer, the ice is melting more so it is easier to access and explore the area
Alberta oil sands
Bitumen - water sand bitumen( petroleum)
Open pit or in situ
What is natural gas composed of?
Mostly methane
- use pipes to pump it out of oil fields
What is unconventional natural gas?
Shale gas extracted by fracking
Why is methane hydrate good?
Has a higher energy potential than natural oil and coal combined
- found deep in the ocean sediments or in Arctic permafrost
What gases are released from fracking?
CO2 and CH4
What does fracking induce
Earthquakes
- when fracking is removed they go away
What is nuclear fission?
Neutron is shot at a uranium atom
- generates an unstable molecule, breaks apart and releases energy as heat
