Renewable Energy Resources Flashcards
What accounts for 59% of Canada’s energy?
Hydroelectric
- mostly Quebec
How do hydropower damns/reservoirs work?
Pipes that control the flow of water coming through the damn which spins a turbine producing energy
What are the downfalls of hydro electric?
Destroys land and impedes fish migration
What is pumped storage hydro power?
Natural body of water and a physically higher reservoir from the body of water
What is the second fastest growing energy source?
Wind
- not being use to its full potential
What are the 2 types of turbines used?
Vertical axis and horizontal axis
Where is a wind hotspot in Canada and what is that energy mostly used for?
Great Lakes
- powers the industries of southern Ontario and Quebec
What are some negative effects of wind energy?
Causes description symptoms
Birds and bird migration are disrupted
Bats
What is the nocebo effect?
Experiencing negative health effects after they have had administration of inert medication or procedure
What NIMBY?
Not in my back yard
-people who don’t want turbines in their area generally don’t benefit from them
What is bio energy?
Energy derived I’m the conversion of bias into fuel or processed into liquids and gases
What is biodiesel?
Vegetable oils and animal fats are converted into useable forms of fuel
How do you make bioethanol?
Fermentation and distillation form sugar and grain crops as well as corn
Downfall to bioethanol?
We are putting in more energy to produce it than we are actually getting out of it
What is biogas?
Capturing gases that come out of natural processes anyways
