Lead Flashcards
What was lead used for?
Waterproofing pipes, cooking vessels
- Romans used it for everything
- 1st metal to be extracted
What activity was lead used in?
Hunting
- lead balls would get into the animal and make it sick, other animals would come along and eat the animal and ingest the Pb
How do you get Pb to dissolve in acid?
Pb+acid+O2–> Pb2+
- because Pb doesn’t readily dissolve in acid
What part of the body does lead affect?
Neurological and reproductive systems
How can lead get into water?
Water can leave the treatment plant with no Pb, but as it travels through the pipes, it can get in because of the solder used to fuse the copper pipes together
In calcerous waters, what happens to Pb?
It can form a natural layer of PbCO3 which is highly insoluble and can coat the walls of the pipes
What happens when your water doesn’t have enough minerals?
Have to add P ions to the water so it can react with the Pb and stick to the inside of the pipes
What glaze was used for pottery items?
PbO
- now replaced with lead silicate
What colour is lead chromate?
Deep yellow ( lines in the road)
What colour is lead oxide?
Red
Corrosion protection paint
What is white lead use in?
White pigment in paint
What kind of lead is used in car batteries?
Pb0 and Pb4+ are used as electrodes
What are lead methyl and lead ethyl used for?
Both covalent and were added to gasoline to prevent pre-ignition
What kind of lead is strictly anthropogenic?
Alkylate lead
What is the problem with metallic lead post combustion?
Damages engine components , and the Pb is converted to a volatile compound from the exhaust and combines with Br or Cl
- Br and Cl combination can be oxidize by the sun and produce Lead particulates
