Water Properties Flashcards
A weak acid or base that can react with strong acid or bases to help prevent sharp, sudden changes in pH.
A Buffer
The property in which a molecule has poles or uneven charges spread across its atoms.
Polarity
The same molecules sticking together. (Water sticking to water.)
Cohesion
Different molecules sticking together. (Water sticking to grass.)
Adhesion
A certain type of cohesion where water molecules stick together more tightly on the surface of a body of water.
Surface Tension
The movement of a liquid through a narrow tube/space going against the force of gravity. This occurs as a result of cohesion and adhesion.
Capillary Action
Materials composed of two or more elements/compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined.
A Mixture
Matter made up of one or more substances dissolved in another substance. (Sugar water.)
A Solution
A substance that dissolves IN a solvent; usually ions (charged particles.)
A Solute
A substance that another substance dissolves in.
A Solvent
A mixture of water and non dissolved materials (muddy water.)
Suspension
A measurement system used to indicate the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution that ranges from 0 to 14, 7 is in the middle (neutral point.)
pH Scale
A substance capable of releasing or forming hydrogen ions in solution with a pH less than 7.
An Acid
Any substance that tends to accept hydrogen ions or produces hydroxide ions in solution; substance has a pH greater than 7 and is called an alkaline.
