Cell Division and Mitosis Flashcards
A type of reproduction-fission, budding, and regeneration-in which a new organism is produced from one organism and has DNA identical to the parent organism
Asexual Reproduction
Any cell other than a gamete or stem cell that helps to form the body
Somatic/ Body Cell
The entire life of a cell from its production, to growth and division
Cell Cycle
Cell process in which the nucleus divides to form two nuclei identical to each other, and identical to the original nucleus, in a series of steps (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase)
Mitosis
Loose, uncondensed DNA found in a cell undergoing interphase
Chromatin
Tightly coiled DNA that condenses into visible chromosomes as a cell prepares to divide
Chromosome
Two identical halves of a single replicated eukaryotic chromosome
Sister Chromatids
the part of a chromosome at which the two sister chromotids attach
Centromere
The phase in which the cell grows, DNA is replicated, and new organelles are produced
Interphase
The phase in which chromosomes condense and become visible, centrioles appear, and the nuclear membrane starts to break down.
Prophase
The phase in which chromosomes line up at the center of the cell and spindle fibers attach to the centromeres.
Metaphase
The phase which sister chromatids are pulled apart by the spindle fibers and move to opposite ends of the cell
Anaphase
The phase in which a new nuclear membrane is starting to form around each identical set of loosening DNA at the end of the cell
Telophase
The phases when the cell pinches in and the cytoplasm is divided between 2 new daughter cells; slightly different in plant and animal cells
Cytokenesis
