Biochemistry Flashcards
Chemical compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen together, which are derived from living matter
Organic
A small unit that can join together with other small unites or molecules to make up a macromolecule: a sub unit or percursor molecule
Monomer
a large compound formed from combinations of many percursor monomers
Polymer
A compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms; major source of energy source for the human body
Carbohydrate
A single sugar molecule
Monosaccharide
A large macromolecule formed from monosaccharides or sugars that are linked together
Polyssaccharide
A macromolecule made mainly from carbon and hydrogen atoms; examples include fats, oils, and waxes.
Lipid
A macromolecule that contains carbon, hydrogen oxygen, and nitrogen. Needed by the bod for growth and repair to make up enzymes.
Protein
A compound with an amino group on one end and a carboxyl group on the other end. The monomer/building block of proteins.
Amino Acid
A macromolecule containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus, which carry genetic info.
Nucleic Acid
A monomer or single sub-unit of nucleic acids made up of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.
Nucleotide
A single stranded nucleic acid that contains the sugar ribrose.
Ribonucleic Acid (RNA)
A double stranded nucleic acid that contains the sugar deoxyribose.
Deocynucleic Acid (DNA)
A process that changes one set of chemicals into another set of chemicals
Chemical Reaction
An element or compound that enters or goes into a chemical reaction
Reactant
