Water On The Land Flashcards
Wetlands
Low lying area which is covered by water for a lot of the year- provides a habitat for a lot of plats and animals.
Tributary
A river or stream that feed into another
Precipitation
Rain, snow, hail etc .
Infiltration
Water going into the soils.
Through flow
The movement of water through the soil
Transpiration
Plats giving off water though the pores in their leaves
Abrasion
The rivers load rubbing against the side of the river
Attrition
The rivers load rubbing against each other until they become sand and silt sized particles.
Traction
Large boulders rolling along the river bed.
Saltation
Pebbles bouncing along the river bed
Suspension
Sand and silt sized particles being carried
Solution
Dissolved minerals from rocks such as limestone
Amount of load carried depends on:
Volume of water
Velocity
Rock types
Head waters
The source of the river which can be from the under ground springs or mountain snow
More potential energy leads to:
More vertical erosion
Formation of waterfalls
Hard rock over soft rock.
Hydronic action and corrosion erodes soft rock quicker.
Undercut leads to over hanging hard rock.
Can lead to gorge
Levees
River bursts its banks and due to more friction the velocity drops. The rivers load is then deposited into the flood plain.
What graphs are use to display base flow and storm flow
Hydrographs
Water deficit
Not enough water
Water surplus
Enough and spare water
