Water In The Uk Flashcards
Why is the demand for water increasing in the uk?
•As the population increases demand also increases
•increase in household appliances such as dishwashers which use a high amount of water
•Farming and industry use large quantities of water
How can we save water?
•by recycling water- treated wastewater is used for tasks like watering plants, industry needs, or flushing toilets, preserving clean drinking water for people to drink
•Using domestic water -encourages water conservation by making people aware of their water usage and prompting them to use water more efficiently
What is kielder reservoir?
Kielder reservoir, located in the Pennines collects water to be transpired southwards and released into rivers
What are the advantages of Kielder Reservoir?
•the reservoir has reduced water insecurity in the north east e.g. rivers that flow into cities like Sunderland have much more water in them
•tourism at Kielder has provided new jobs and generated incomes e.g. people visit there for sports and to see scenery
What are the disadvantages of Kielder reservoir?
•The breeding patterns off fish have been disrupted through the dam blocking the river and fewer pebbles travel down stream impacting habitats
•farmland and many habitats were lost when the land behind the dam flooded
How can pesticides and fertilisers running off into farmland pollute the water?
Pesticides and fertilizers can pollute water when rain washes them from fields into nearby water, harming aquatic life and drinking water quality. Over time, this pollution can accumulate and have lasting environmental effects.
How can pollution from industry pollute the water?
Pollution from industry can contaminate water through discharges of untreated waste water containing heavy metals and chemicals and runoff from industrial sites, negatively impacting water quality and aquatic ecosystems.
How can sewage pollute the water?
Improperly treated or disposed sewage releases harmful contaminants and pathogens into water, polluting it and posing health risks.
How can run off from roads and motorways pollute waters?
Runoff from roads and motorways can pollute water by carrying pollutants like oil, heavy metals, and chemicals into nearby water bodies, degrading water quality and harming aquatic ecosystems
What is being done to manage water quality in the uk?
•Legislation- strict laws which ensure that factors and farms are limited to the amount of waste they put into rivers
•education campaigns- informing the public about the damage caused by putting inappropriate items into sewage e.g. baby wipes
•waste water treatment- local waste water treatment plants remove solids to produce clean water
•investing in new infrastructure-better sewage can produce leakage
