Global Distribution Of Resources Flashcards
What is a resource?
A stock or or supply of something that has value or purpose e.g. food, energy and water
What are the 5 reasons for uneven consumption of resources globally?
1) quantity
2)wealth
3)technology/infrastructure
4)standard of living
5)diet
How does resource quantity in countries lead to uneven consumption of resources?
•some places naturally have more resources due to geographical location
•Middle East have lots of oil reservers which they can use and sell
How does wealth in countries lead to uneven global consumption of resources?
HIC’s can exploit any natural resources using equipment and technology which they can use or trade
How does technology/infrastructure in countries lead to global uneven consumption of resources?
•HICs can afford the correct technology and infrastructure to store and transport water to houses
•They can use farming technology to increase crop yields and to mine energy for resources
How does standard of living in countries lead to global uneven consumption of resources?
•countries with a higher living standard will consume more resources e.g. they will be able to afford more advanced technology like dishwashers and therefore use more energy
How does diet in countries lead to global uneven consumption of resources?
HICs can afford access to a range of foods whereas LICs have restricted access to food
What are the impacts of having a lack of clean water on people in the world today?
•663 million people live without clean water
•2.4 billion people do not have access to adequate water sanitation
What are the impacts of having a lack of clean water on social well being?
•it can have a negative impact on social well-being as contaminated water sources can lead to waterbourne diseases increasing mortality rate
What are the impacts of having a lack of clean water on economic well being
•A lack of sanitation means it is easier to catch illnesses preventing people from working leaving them with a lack of financial security
•reduced food production as water is needed for agriculture
What is the importance of energy globally?
•Energy powers factories, machinery and provides fuel for transport
•As NEEs become more industrialised energy consumption increased
What are the impacts of energy consumption on social wellbeing?
•Reliable access to energy sources such as electricity and clean cooking fuels can improve standard of living
•If schools and hospitals have enough energy they can operate properly also improving living standards
What are the impacts of energy consumption on economic wellbeing?
•Countries can exploit reserves and sell energy resources to gain profit
What is the importance of food in the world?
The World Health Organisation suggests we need 2000-2400 calories per day but 1 billion people fall below this level
What are the impacts of food consumption and agriculture on social wellbeing?
•people in LICs spend the majority of their income on food meaning they do not have enough money for education
•agriculture provides jobs for around 40% of the world population giving them a source of income
