Water Cycle Flashcards
What is water?
Water is a colourless, doesnt have a smell or taste and is a liquid. It is necessary for life and is ingested by all living organisms.
Name 3 direct uses of water
- Humans and animals drink water to stay hydrated.
- Humans and animals use water to get clean.
- People use water to clean other items.
What would be an indirect use of water?
These include processes such as papermaking, electricity generation, large-scale industries and agriculture.
Why do people need water?
Name 3 reasons
- Your body uses water to carry nutrient and oxygen in your body.
- Water allows your body to absorb minerals, vitamins, amino acids, glucose and other substances.
- Water helps to regulate body temperature.
Why do plants need water?
Plants need water to grow, for photosynthesis, for cooling and for transporting minerals and nutrients from the soil to the plant.
Why do animals need water?
Animals need water for their bodies to function. They drink water and get water in the food they eat.
Where do we get water from?
Dams
Rivers
Wetlands
Groundwater
Rain
What is a water cycle
A water cycle is the movement of water from land and sea to the air, and back again (by evaporation, condensation, freezing, transpiration and melting).
What are the four phases in the water cycle?
Evaporation
Condensation
Precipitation
Draining / Runoff
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is when water droplets in the clouds become heavy and fall down (in the form of snow, hail, sleet or rain).
When does drainage occur?
Drainage/runoff occurs when much of this water flows into the rivers and lakes and is then returned to the sea.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation occurs when heat from the sun causes the water of the sea, lakes, and rivers to rise in the air and turn into water vapor. This water vapor then melts together to form clouds.
What is condensation?
Condensation occurs when water vapor cools and changes back to the liquid phase and then forms clouds in the air.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration- is when plants emit water vapor from their leaves.
What are raw materials?
This is when a material is in its natural state. It has not been processed.
