What is a shelter?
A shelter is a place where the animal or human can live safely
What does it mean if a shelter is man made?
It is made by humans.
What does it mean if a shelter is natural?
It is something formed in nature, not man-made.
Why do animals need shelter/protection?
Animals need shelter for protection from:
1. The elements (rain, cold, sun etc.).
2. To hide from predators (protection).
3. Animals also need shelter to have a place to raise their young.
There are two types of natural shelters - do you know what they are?
- Found Shelters
- Made Shelters
Can you name two examples of found shelters?
- A hollow in a tree for an owl
- Caves for bats to live in
Can you name two examples of made shelters?
- Meerkats/Dassies make tunnels underground
- A birds nest
What is a wildlife rehabilitation centre?
A place where wild animals that have injuries, can be looked after until they can return to the wild.
What is a shell structure?
A shell structure is generally hollow inside. For example, a bird’s nest or the shell on the back of a snail.
What is a frame structure?
A frame structure is made up of joined pieces. A spider web can be a great example of a frame structure as it is designed to hold the weight of the spider and its prey!
