water + carbon cycle in rainforest Flashcards
how does the water cycle work in the rainforest
1: precipitation is intercepted by leaves, some of which evaporates.
2: this slowly reaches the ground which allows infiltration
3: water is taken up by plants and released through transpiration
4: once trees are cut down, there is no interception, therefore the water reaches the ground at the same time and callot infiltrate and runs off the river
5: without the trees evaportating, transpiration cant take place and then has less precipitation
how does the carbon cycle work
1: trees absorb co2 through photosynthesis and release o2
2: once trees are cut down, co2 cant be absorbed therefore the amount of it increases
3: the forests are also cleared by slash and burn which releases even more co2 into the atmosphere
