factors affecting microclimate Flashcards
what is an isotherm
a line of equal temperature
what is a microclimate
climate on a small scale
what is urban heat island
urban areas that are warmer than their rural surroundings
what is the temperature difference at night between urban and rural areas
12 degrees celcius
what are urban areas warmer
dark surfaces absorb solar radiation and heat up quicker
higher levels of pollutants, these trap the heat
lack of evaporation in the city so it cant release the heat
shape of the city (topography)
buildings trap the heat
suns energy is absorbed by buildings
why are rural areas cooler
because of the buildings, it blocks the wind making it warmer in urban areas compared to rural areas which is mostly flat, open areas therefore there is alot of cold wind
