water aid representation Flashcards
how is a stereotypical representation of womens gender roles created?
Claudia wears a pink costume and skirt which is a typical representation of femininity and women are seen doing laundry and childcare which are old fashioned gender stereotypes- conforms to van zoonens feminist theory that women are often shown in domestic roles
how is the community represented?
positive representation of their sense of community and togetherness as they all sing and are smiling- hope shown through high key lighting surrounding water pump and vibrant colour palette
why does the advert use unconventional positive representations of this community?
they use it in hopes that more people will donate as the conventional use of distressing images is ineffective in bringing about feelings of sadness due to the audiences repeated exposure and therefore desensitisation to it
how is the charity represented?
shown to have a great impact on these communities so that audiences will become more aware of the changes they can make and donate
how are the issues in the ad represented?
it could be argued that they’re underrepresented as it is unrealistic that everyone will remain positive and happy despite the severity of the issue and their consequential responsibilities
how does the advert subvert Gilroys post colonialism theory?
it doesn’t reflect the stereotypical colonial views of ethnic minorities as it represents the community in a positive and hopeful way showing their gratitude rather than making them seem needy and as tragic figures
how can gauntlets theory of identity be applied to water aid?
younger women can see similarities between Claudia and themselves making them more likely to feel sympathetic and want to donate but she could also be seen as a role model for some as she is strong and takes on a difficult task whilst staying positive
