Water Flashcards
Humans can only survive for how long without water ?
A few days.
We can survive without food for approximately 8 weeks.
How much of the human body is water?
50-70%.
Lean tissue has high water content (73%), while fat tissue contains 20% water. A person with a high percentage of lean body tissue, muscle mass, will have a high percentage of total body water.
What helps to control the water balance inside cells and outside the cells?
The concentration of the ions inside and outside the cells controls the water balance- such as sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, magnesium and calcium
Intracellular water volume relies on the concentrations of what two ions ?
Potassium and phosphate
Extracellular water volume depends on the concentrations of what ions ?
sodium and chloride
How is water important for body temperature regulation?
When we sweat, fluid is being released through skin pores and evaporates. This process requires energy and in turn expels heat from the body and prevents the internal temperature from rising.
The amount of urine excreted is influenced by our intake of __________ and ________________
protein and sodium.
As intake increases so does urine output.
Importance of maintaining water balance -
If the amount excreted falls below 2 cups daily, urine becomes very concentrated and there is an increased risk of kidney stones
To maintain body fluids in sufficient amounts we want to maintain water balance. The amount lost through perspiration, respiration, urine and feces should be balanced with an adequate intake.
Antidiuretic hormone
Conserves water. Is released from the pituitary gland and signals the kidneys to conserve water.
Aldosterone
Conserves sodium and influences water retention. Released from the adrenal glands and acts upon the kidneys.
